Love Sonia, at the core of it all, subtly shows us the evilness that exists in our country and specifically deals with the issues of human trafficking and the global sex trade. Directed by Tabrez Noorani, Love Sonia is a hard-hitting tale of two sisters – Sonia (Mrunal Thakur) and Preeti (Riya Sisodiya) who are forced into prostitution. While Preeti gets taken away due to her father’s income issues, Sonia willingly heads to Mumbai in pursuit of her sister.

What follows then is the descent of the innocence of Sonia and Preeti, one day at a time and with subtle monstrosity, we see the inner workings of a brothel. The way women are treated like rag dolls and sex objects. Mrunal makes an impactful Bollywood debut with Love Sonia and it is her expressive face that furthers the storyline and shows us the cruelty her character has to endure. Even Riya complements Mrunal with her naivety which gets tarnished eventually and brutally.

The supporting characters include Manoj Bajpayee as Faizal who is extremely detestable and it’s ironical how he has principles for his clients but does not adhere to them himself. Adil Hussain plays Sonia and Preeti’s father Shiva who shows us the inner struggle and the guilt a parent has to feel when they themselves are responsible for the atrocities faced by their children. Richa Chadha, adds spunk to Madhuri with a cold-hearted passion while Frieda Pinto as Rashmi is a revelation and almost unrecognisable. Rajkummar Rao plays Manish, who comes as a saviour for Preeti and many like her. In spite of limited screen time, the actor does justice to his part.

The first half is the beginning of the storm before the actual storm and is heavily focused on Mumbai itself. The interval is sure to leave you with many undefined scars and we still have the second half to go.

For the second half, we will be travelling to both Bangkok and LA and see how the story progresses and whether Sonia and Preeti will make it out alive or forever remain trapped in Mumbai Meri Jaan!
