JP Dutta – the creator of the 1997 film Border and famous 2003 film LOC: Kargil – has now come up with his third movie in the war trilogy series, Paltan. Based on true events, the film showcases the battle fought by the Indian soldiers to safeguard Nathu La, Sikkim from China. The first part of the movie starts in the year 1962 arena when Indians were attacked by Chinese and our country lost 1363 soldiers. Then, cut to 1967, we are taken through the ground reality of the Indo-Chinese Border tension that prevailed then. The first part of the movie introduces the major characters – Jackie Shroff, Arjun Rampal, Sonu Sood, Harshvardhan Rane, Gurmeet Choudhary, Luv Sinha, Dipika Kakar and Monica Gill.
The movie has layers wherein you see both on-field life of soldiers and their personal lives. JP Dutta has tried to recreate Border but has clearly lost the vision. The very idea of making the film over-patriotic is not working for the film. There are scenes like where we see Indian and Chinese soldiers throwing stones at each other. We wonder if that’s how war field works? Dialogues like ‘The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war’ and ‘We are here to make stories’ are doing no favour to the film. Those who have seen Border and LOC, they wouldn’t feel the same power in the third film. Well, the movie has surely touched upon the topic of Indo-Chinese war that many are not acquainted with.
Going by the first part, the movie is bland with loosely stitched fragments. The Chinese counterpart actor fails to deliver a powerful performance. The style of story-telling is the same as that of the 1997 film Border, but we have moved on and are living in 2018.
We hope the movie progresses in a better way in the second half. Stay tuned for the full movie review
